FOR THE BARNRAISERS BOOK CLUB…

Just got hipped to this book on Friday by my Bay Area bro, who thought it sounded sorta familiar…

Here’s some more info on the novel, from the intro to a solid interview with author Ken Layne (who’s also the editor-in-chief at Wonkette [!]):

Composed as a collection of letters from a character called “N,” Dignity is set in the ruined housing tracts and bountiful desert of the American Southwest. The housing crisis has emptied the subdivisions, and the economic collapse has filled the cities with chaos and despair.

As Layne writes:

“Like villagers in a medieval town visited by the Black Death, the Californians were huddling together in terror, burying their dead, and doubtful they could care for more young. The long Western boom had staggered to a halt.”

In the midst of this apocalypse, a few resourceful people form self-reliant desert communities in their region’s foreclosed houses and abandoned strip malls. From the shells of this collapsing civilization comes a new way of life: The citizens of these new communities grow their food, school their children, create art, take long walks through their gardens and the surrounding wilderness, and enjoy a sane and balanced relationship with their natural surroundings, themselves and each other.

After the exodus to escape persecution in the city, the communities find they’ve been followed into the exurban ghost towns. As the mysterious character “B” says: “In their sickness, they will strike out at those in good health.”

GrowShack #4: Our “menu” is expanding

GrowShack #4 is up! This time an 8′ x 12′ rectangle with built in raised beds. Our “menu” of GrowShack designs has expanded. We have 4 different models built and over a dozen more designs waiting to be put into service. If you are interested in having a GrowShack of your own contact us and we can build one for you.

Barnraiser/ GrowShacker Nicholas Holmes and GrowShacker apprentice Brett Pinar braved 108 degree temps and got the structure and roof wire up in a day. Nicholas and helper Bryan Sundstrom wrapped things up on day 2, getting the wall wire and trim up, and installing the raised beds. Our client “BC” is thrilled!

Sun Aug 21 5pm: A visit with Beekeeper Bill Blackburn of 29 Palms

Hi-Desert Barnraiser Nicholas Holmes writes:

This Sunday, August 21st Beekeeper Bill Blackburn is hosting an educational tour of his amazing hi-desert garden and open house tour of his house just listed for sale. Don’t miss this great event.

Bill is an avid permaculturalist and organic gardener who’s had great success creating a diverse and abundant desert garden at his 2 1/2-acre property near the national park entrance in 29 Palms. A master of mulching and vermiculture, Bill transformed his gravelly sandy grounds around his house into a lush desert oasis, successfully growing a diverse garden including peaches, apricots, pomegranates, almonds, grapes, citrus, dates, goji berries, pineapple, ginger, canna, and vegetables and herbs galore. All without growshacks or even a single fence.

We will be meeting at Bill’s house at 5pm for an approximately one-hour guided educational tour of his garden and house:

74429 Sunset Drive
Twentynine Palms, CA 92277

Please carpool!

After years invested in creating this amazing garden, Bill is choosing to move on to other things in life and will be selling his garden (and the house along with it of course). If you know of anyone who might be interested, please pass this email along.

GrowShack #2 is Underway

GrowShack #1

The Barnraisers have been building ‘GrowShacks’. Covered on all sides with aviary wire, GrowShacks are perfect for growing food in the desert, sans hungry critters. We designed them for ourselves, but we’ll build you one. Contact us for more info….

Barnraising #2

We gathered on two Saturdays in Nov/Dec at Stephanie and Jay’s Joshua Tree site for our second barnraising!

Barnraiser Stephanie Smith sprearheaded the effort to build an outdoor shower/outhouse with a greywater system and a humanure toilet.

The structure is 90% finished!

Thanks to all the Barnraisers who worked on the project: Thomas, Alexis, Nicholas, Gregory, Tania, Jill, Jeffrey, Jay and Kim.

Alma lent tools. And Candacy and Deborah brought pizza.

Much appreciated!

Barnraising #1

We gathered on Saturday Oct 16 at Blake’s Mojave Sands Motel for our first barnraising!

Barnraiser Nicholas Holmes sprearheaded the effort to build a rammed earth bench. Stephanie Smith, Blake Simpson, Gregory Glenn, Lynelle White, Deborah Martin and Bobby Furst all lent a hand. Eva and Jenny did too. Tucker (the dog) provided emotional support, and Chantale Doyle provided much needed refreshments. Lance Charles couldn’t make it Saturday, but created a straw bale bench nearby as part of the effort.

Thanks to all!

It will dry for 48 hours then we’ll add a wood plank top.

Come see the finished bench at our next Tuesday meeting.

Guerrilla Urbanism

From NYTimes.com

Check out “72 Hour Urban Action,” a guerrilla architecture and design festival in Israel…

“10 teams of architects, artists, designers and students — from Israel, Morocco, the United States, South Korea, Italy, Taiwan, Russia, Bulgaria and Turkey — competed in a race to construct, from start to finish, public-scale projects in just three days and nights. The hope is that their vision may give a new tilt to the city’s design direction… All 122 contestants ate, slept and brainstormed in an elementary school (empty, thanks to the Sukkot holiday) near the project’s construction site. During the Action, construction and safety engineers offered support to the teams, which were given a budget of $2,500 for materials. They also had two trucks and a tractor at their disposal, along with a pair of bright orange overalls for everyone. The winning team was awarded $3,800 as a cash prize as well as the chance for its creation to remain in Bat Yam for good…”

I can see the Barnraisers sponsoring something like this for Joshua Tree…

Potluck & Brainstorm Tonight!

This Tuesday (Sept 7) we’ll host a special BARNRAISERS POTLUCK and
Joshua Tree Master Plan BRAINSTORM.
We’re 24 members now (wow!), and Tuesday’s a chance for all of us to
meet new members, talk shop, and kick off a busy fall.
Meet at our usual location, Mojave Sands Motel, 6pm.
Please bring an appetizer to share, and something to drink. We’ll
probably go til at least 8pm, so if you need to arrive late, no
problem.
The goal is to come up with a few crazy smart ideas for upgrading
downtown Joshua Tree. And have some fun in the process.
Please feel free to bring friends and family. Everyone is welcome.
See you there!
